Folded Field

Folded Field preserves one real fragment of hand-knotted Persian carpet inside a rigorously machined contemporary object. The clutch is a monolithic black anodised aluminium rectangle with softly chamfered edges and no applied ornament. Its front is cut by one diagonal trapezoidal recess that grows from a narrow opening at the lower left to a wider field at the upper right. Beneath flush smoked optical glass, the textile remains physically present: individual madder, indigo and ivory knots can be read at close range, yet they are protected from handling and abrasion. The diagonal aperture is conceived as a precise section through a larger carpet rather than a framed miniature.

It withholds most of the source and makes the surviving fragment feel archaeological, while the severe shell places that material in direct contrast with contemporary aerospace fabrication. A single short brass clasp on the top edge is the only warm metal element. The back and sides remain completely plain, so turning the object over produces a deliberate shift from dense cultural information to near-total silence. Light completes the work without becoming a component. A warm grazing beam penetrates the smoked glass and reveals pile height, knot direction and minor irregularities; a cooler edge light describes the aluminium volume and 40-millimetre depth.

The case can be produced in a small numbered edition by CNC machining two aluminium shells, installing a concealed hinge and magnetic clasp, and laminating each carefully selected textile fragment beneath replaceable optical glass. Because every carpet section is cut from a different documented remnant, each edition retains the same geometry while carrying a unique field of handwork.
