Unfinished-carpet works

An avant-garde approach to the carpet that honours its weavers and draws attention to the difficult livelihoods of people who produce valuable objects. By presenting the carpet through the idea of incompletion, the works bring the human conditions surrounding its production into view.

Proceeds from these works have been directed towards improving the livelihoods of carpet weavers. The relationship between the value of the finished carpet and the economic circumstances of its makers is central to the project.

Central concern
The livelihoods and labour of carpet weavers.
Design approach
An unconventional treatment of the unfinished carpet.
Social contribution
Proceeds used to support improvements in weavers’ livelihoods.

The Cigarette

A carpet depicting a cigarette hangs from a wall. As it reaches the floor, the textile folds and crumples, recalling a cigarette being pressed into an ashtray. Its lower section is burned. The work addresses the negative effects of smoking on life and health through the damage inflicted on a valuable object.

The meeting of a familiar image and a traditional textile creates a direct visual tension. Beauty, craftsmanship and harm are encountered together, giving material form to the consequences of an everyday habit.

Central concern
Smoking, health, damage and loss.
Design approach
The carpet used as both image and physical metaphor.
Artistic language
Contrast between the value of the textile and its visible injury.
